The Discovery of the Pacific. From sea to sea
Art by: Enrique Breccia
Written by: Enrique Breccia
Lope de Aguirre was published in 1992 as part of the “Relatos del Nuevo Mundo” series, dedicated to the 500th Anniversary of the discovery of America.
On 1 September 1513, Spanish conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean. Setting out from the town of Santa María, which he had founded two years earlier, he crossed the Isthmus of Panama with 190 Spanish soldiers and a thousand indigenous people, finally arriving on the Pacific coast.
This well-researched historical comic book recounts the adventures of this perilous journey, the attempts at betrayal, the clashes with indigenous peoples, and the final discovery of an ocean still unknown to Europeans.
