The Discovery of the Pacific. From Ocean to Ocean

Art by: Enrique Breccia

Written by: Enrique Breccia

On 1 September 1513, Spanish conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa became the first European to sight the Pacific Ocean. Departing from the city of Santa María la Antigua del Darién, which he had founded two years earlier, he crossed the Isthmus of Panama with 190 Spanish soldiers and a thousand indigenous people, finally reaching the Pacific coast.

This historical comic book recounts the adventures of this perilous journey, the attempts at betrayal, the clashes with indigenous peoples, and the final discovery of an ocean still unknown to Europeans.

First published in Spain in 1992 within the collection Relatos del Nuevo Mundo to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America, this book presents a new facet of the immense talent of the Argentine artist.
