Set against the rich backdrop of Spanish history, the El Cid series explores the young years of the 11th-century Castilian knight Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a.k.a. El Cid. This beautifully illustrated, captivating historical comic tells the story of this legendary knight, who collaborated with Castilian Infante Sancho II to reconquer southern Spain from the Moors. In the breathtaking beauty of its pages we are given the privilege of glimpsing into the turbulent times they lived through.
Initially the series was planned for some 21 volumes but was left unfinished due to the death of the author, who was only able to do four (until 1065), this is Sancho of Castile, The Cortes of León, The Taking of Coimbra and The Crusade of Barbastro. The story initially focuses on the Infante Don Sancho, son of the King of León Ferdinand I the Great, of whom Rodrigo is his young and impetuous lieutenant.
The author Enric Sió wrote in the prologue of the first volume: ‘May Allah grant you long life, Antonio Hernández Palacios, so that your Cid may reach the twenty-odd volumes you have planned. Unfortunately, it was not to be.
