In November 1936, Madrid was the scene of a decisive battle that shaped the course of the Spanish Civil War. Its symbolic importance transcended borders, embodied in the slogan ‘¡No pasarán!’.

  When the rebel troops reached the gates of the capital, much of the international press wrote the city off as lost. Against all odds, the expertise of the professional military, the tenacity of the militiamen, government support and the courage of the civilian population prevented its fall.

  XI-36 Battle for Madrid is both a war graphic novel and a tragic tale, approached from a complex perspective free from simplistic dichotomies. It combines historical rigour and visual power in the service of a story about war, totalitarianism and the irreversible consequences of violence.
