We need to fix the Danish problem

Art by: Marina Armengol Mas

Written by: Román López-Cabrera

In November 1809, the town of Huéscar (Granada) received a Royal Order from the Supreme Central Junta declaring war on Denmark on behalf of Ferdinand VII, as an ally of Napoleon's now enemy France. The town council of Huéscar decided to echo this call, and to take the war on as its own, placing a proclamation in the town for general knowledge.

In 1981, an article by the archivist of Huéscar, Vicente González Barberán, entitled ‘¡Hay que arreglar lo de Dinamarca!’, uncovered an unusual fact: it seems that the war between the Nordic country and the small Andalusian village was never concluded. This article would unleash a growing interest in the subject, with a whirlwind of news, each one more outlandish, until it resulted in the symbolic signing of the peace between the two ‘powers’, carried out in Huéscar, in a multitudinous ceremony full of regional costumes and Viking costumes.
