Nördlingen

Art by: Francisco Asencio

Written by: Carlos Peinado Gil

In September 1634, two very different armies clashed on the outskirts of Nördlingen. On one side stood the Swedish army and its Protestant allies, driven by innovative tactics, who had arrived on the continent on the back of a series of previous victories. On the other, the Spanish-Imperial Catholic army, in which the experienced Spanish tercios stood out.

The city, which had been under siege, launched a daring sortie with the intention of defeating the Catholic army in a single pitched battle. The fate of both armies would be decided at a single point: the Hill of Albuch. There it would be determined whether modern techniques could overcome a system of combat that had dominated European battlefields for a century.
