Art by: Marina Armengol Más
Written by: Román López-Cabrera
Miguel Hernández Gilabert was born in Orihuela in 1910; after a few years of studies at the Jesuit school of Santo Domingo, his father decided that he would be more useful looking after the family’s herd of goats. But Miguel soon realised that his destiny was to write verse and theatre.
With this determination he began a long struggle to make a place for himself on the literary scene in Madrid in the 1930s, until he managed to rub shoulders with names of the stature of Pablo Neruda, Vicente Aleixandre, Maruja Mallo, Rafael Alberti and Federico García Lorca. Along the way he discovered love and, after several disappointments, it was Josefina Manresa whom he ended up marrying.
