In the 16th century, only two countries in the world, Portugal and Spain, were able to sail to Asia. The former had to do so via its own route, the African route to the east.
Spain, on the other hand, was obliged to undertake the voyage via America, to the west. That meant crossing the extremely dangerous Pacific Ocean.
In that vast Pacific Ocean, the winds and currents drove the Spanish ships back towards Asia, and they were unable to complete their voyage successfully. It was impossible to return to Spanish America! That return journey, known as the ‘tornaviaje’, remained an unresolved challenge for Spanish navigation.
Philip II, fed up with not being able to trade safely with Asia, commissioned Andrés de Urdaneta to find a route for the round trip. And suddenly history changed.
