1680. The Pueblo Revolt
Art by: Antonio de la Llera
Written by: Carlos Hermo
The Pueblo Indian uprising in New Mexico in 1860 was the greatest disaster suffered by New Spain to date.
Drought... Scarcity... Abuse on estates and in mines... Persecution of their beliefs, with public punishments and executions... An explosive cocktail that resulted in the loss of an entire province and one of the worst massacres suffered by the powerful empire.
It also marked the beginning of the legend of Josefillo el Negro. Son of the rebel chieftain of African origin Domingo Naranjo and a Moqui Indian woman. A teenage fugitive who would go down in history as José López Naranjo, captain major of the war and chief scout of the mythical dragones de cuera. A hero (or traitor) who fought for forty years to pacify the last frontier.
Two proud peoples fighting for a hostile territory. A story of survival and cultural fusion.
