15 years on the streets

Art by: Miguel Fuster

Written by: Miguel Fuster

Miguel Fuster was an illustrator from Barcelona. At the age of 16, he joined Ediciones Bruguera as an apprentice illustrator and shortly afterwards, he became part of the staff at the Selecciones Ilustradas agency. He also worked for Norma Editorial in the early 1980s, but excesses, alcohol and misfortune (his house burnt down) led him to end up living on the streets. He wandered around Barcelona and the surrounding area for fifteen years, addicted to drink.

15 Years on the Streets recount the experiences of humiliation and violence during the many years the author Miguel Fuster spent homeless on the streets of Barcelona. It is the record of a life shattered, laid bare and vulnerable.

This book,  co-published by the Arrels Foundation and Godall Edicions, is a revised, refined and expanded reissue of a previous edition published in 2016 by La Chula Productions.

Key points:

  • A mirror reflecting our indifference and collective failure as a society to prevent homelessness

  • A plight of those living on the streets

  • Miguel Fuster’s drawing style is tortured, visceral, sometimes worn, always dark. In contrast to the clear-lined style of his youth, the author scratches over the portraits, invades the outlines of the drawings, spills over into a tangle of lines and shadows where flashes of light appear by omission. Miguel’s work is a harsh but necessary work
