Alonso Ibáñez and his son Gonzalo are nobles, but this nobility is their only possession. To make matters worse, destiny has turned them into a nuisance for the King of Spain, due to an unwanted duel with a neighbouring nobleman, who is wealthier but lacking in intelligence. Often used as pawns in the political game of the court, the Ibáñez family must act to remain unscathed in the game.

Gonzalo de Ibáñez, after trial and conviction, and saving himself as best he can from the vicissitudes of fate, will be responsible for traveling a path that will take him to the lowest depths of Spanish society of his time. On his journey, he will meet valuable friends and dangerous enemies, and little by little he will climb to his rightful place, this time earning it through his own efforts.
